The Fire Investigation Team is a group of volunteer and career fire department members with specialized training and certification to determine the cause and origin of fires. They work directly under the authority of the Chief of Fire Department or the Chief’s designee.

Members of the Fire Investigation Team must meet minimum training requirements set by the Chief of Department. They work with senior staff to develop the skills necessary to assist certified investigators. Team leaders selected to continue training attend courses at the New York State Academy of Fire Science, beginning with a week-long course in Cause and Origin Determination. After the successful completion of a supervised internship, the member may be recommended for certification as a NYS Fire Investigator Level I and sit for a NYS examination.

Fire Investigation Team members may use photography, interview techniques, computer graphics and a variety of other skills to create a report of the fire scene and subsequent investigation. Members deal with confidential information that may be used for court cases, Juvenile Firesetter ProgramJuvenile Fire Setters Program referrals and fire prevention and community education activities.

Some members may be approved for co-membership on the Cortland County Fire Investigation Team.
