Community Safety Education

The City of Cortland Fire Department engages in year round community education, prevention and safety programs that include:

Groups of all ages tour the fire station to learn about the fire department and techniques to improve fire safety.  Groups can also learn how to use fire extinguishers on our state-of-the-art simulator.  Whether your preschoolers need to learn “Stop, Drop and Roll” or seniors want to improve fire safety in their homes, our firefighters can provide an educational program or tour to suit your needs.

Fire Safety Programs

Throughout the school year, the Cortland Fire Department provides fire safety programs to Cortland Central School District classes, preschools and daycare programs.  Our offerings range from individual classroom programs to large-scale events featuring Scorch the Fire Dog.  Our “Breakfast with a Firefighter” program gives kids an opportunity to sit with and talk to firefighters in a very “unofficial” way and lets them know that, in an emergency, the folks in uniform are who you should get to for information and safety.

Guest Speakers
The Cortland Fire Department also provides speakers for a range of topics that may interest your organization.  Recent events include presentations for SUNY Cortland Career and Volunteer Day Events, the YWCA Girls Day Out, Model Mom’s and Women Working Together.

CPR & First Aid Courses
Twice a year firefighters teach American Safety and Health institute
Community CPR and First Aid Courses.  These are a low-cost

opportunity for community members to learn life saving
techniques based on the latest American Heart Association guidelines.
These courses are offered at the Armory on Wheeler Avenue.

If you have a need for training at your workplace, call or email to ask us about our group rates.

Annual Open House
The largest event that the City of Cortland Fire Department hosts on-site is its
Annual Fire Department Open House.  This event is always held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week and The Great Cortland Pumpkinfest during the first Saturday in October 10am until 3pm. Our firefighters provide educational opportunities, demonstrations and fun events like the Junior Firefighter Combat Challenge.  Activities change each year but the great CFD Auxiliary is always there with popcorn and cider for this family-oriented event!
